Taiwan - Subiu para dez o número de mortos no terremoto de 6,4 graus na escala Richter, que atingiu na noite de terça-feira a ilha de Taiwan, segundo as informações divulgadas pelas autoridades locais. Cinquenta e oito pessoas continuam desaparecidas e 256 ficaram feridas. Ao todo, quatro prédios desabaram por conta dos tremores de terra.
As equipes de resgate que tentavam retirar pessoas de escombros tiveram seu trabalho dificultado por dezenas de tremores secundários que atingiram a ilha. Cerca de 200 tremores secundários, incluindo um terremoto de magnitude 5,7, atingiram Taiwan no final da quarta-feira. Nesta quinta, abalos menores já foram sentidos. Segundo o governo local, a ilha ainda pode continuar sentindo tremores pelos próximos 15 dias.
As áreas mais afetadas ficam próximas à cidade de Hualien, mais especificamente os distritos de Hualien e Yilan, mas o forte tremor foi sentido em toda a ilha e provocou pânico entre a população, que permanece nas ruas com medo de novos terremotos e dos tremores secundários. O terremoto foi registrado às 23H50 locais (13H50 de Brasília). As equipes de resgate são compostas por 752 bombeiros e policiais e 594 soldados.
Na televisão, imagens mostravam rodovias cheias de escombros e rachaduras, além de imagens do Hotel Marshal, em Hualien, escorado de um lado e com a outra parte completamente desabada.

Rescue workers pulled survivors and bodies from buildings tilting precariously in the Taiwanese city of Hualien on February 7 after an overnight earthquake killed at least six people, injured more than 200 and left dozens missing. Emergency responders were focusing on a 12-storey apartment block and a nearby hotel, both of which were leaning dangerously with their lower floors pancaked after the 6.4-magnitude quake hit the popular tourist city late Tuesday.
